A work colleague of mine recently began Metal detecting as a hobby in his spare time. He had bent my ear on numerous occasions as to the laws and best manner etc. With trepidation he acquired a 2nd hand Gold Mask metal detector and Whilst I was at the Rodney Cook memorial rally, went out with another work colleague and found an average amount of general finds, Victorian coins, ring pulls and lots of iron.
The following week, Whilst I was again on my travels at Detectival, he went out into the wilds of Staffordshire and discovered something a tad more rare.
As you can see by the images, he found a stater, on his 2nd time metal detecting!! Upon being given the coin to peruse on the Monday at work, I shook my head in disbelief at the fantastic find.
I’ve perused the databases I know of, but could any readers assist in its identification?
The Stater will be offered for process at the next museum visit for the local Finds Liason Officer.
