With us spending more and more time outside than ever before due to the current global pandemic of coronavirus the interest in new hobbies are booming. A hobby that originally evolved way back in the 1970’s is making a comeback. Fresh air, exercise and mental well-being, enjoying the outdoors plus the chance to unearth some of your country’s wonderful history, the hobby of metal detecting. Recently launched www.detectornetwork.com is a new and easy to use online platform for beginners and experienced metal detectorists to share advice, their finds and learn more about this exciting hobby.

Setup by two brothers in the UK, Scott a software and web developer and Ashley a keen and avid metal detectorist who was missing the interaction with other lovers of the hobby during lock-down. Unable to detect and missing his hobby desperately, Ashley turned to the current online forums and websites to chat with fellow detectorists. Upon visiting and using these platforms, they realised that they were antiquated, difficult to use, full of advertisements and seemed not to have moved with the times unlike the machines within the hobby.

Naturally there are a lot of social media platforms available, however these are not to everyone’s taste. Whether it’s due to people’s privacy concerns, sharing items found of value and concerned about your location being found or wanting to ignore the latest depressing news feeds or viral cat videos. Scott decided to develop an easy to use and free platform purely for metal detectorists without all of the issues above.

After many days and nights of in-depth testing, Detector Network was launched in early May 2020. With the bare minimum advertising as not to overload the site and time to rule out any bugs the site began to grow with an overwhelming amount of positive feedback.

The key features of Detector Network:

– Create your own personal profile – Find and chat with members (both publicly or via personal chat) – Post on your news-feed (similar to Facebook) – Create and manage pages – Create public / private groups (great for clubs) – Find and create events – Write and publish articles – Advertise your finds or detecting equipment on the site with NO fees – Desktop/laptop live-streaming (web version) / mobile live-streaming (app version) – Day / night (light/dark) mode available – Upload images/videos of your finds – Promote your YouTube channel

Detector Network have released some great new features ,as well as a mobile app for both Android and imminently the Apple version, enabling registered users to share their finds with a live stream with the ability to download it and share on other platforms. They also realise the importance in listening to users for it to grow offering new and innovative features purely focused on metal detecting.

We decided to create Detector Network, a dedicated social platform for metal detecting worldwide. I was able to launch the site in a relatively short amount of time. We hope the user base will continue to grow steadily and look forward to welcoming people coming onboard” Scott Holden Managing Director

With the demographics changing and so many youngsters wishing to take up the hobby not using the most common social media platforms, a dedicated website and app for their phone we feel is naturally more appealing. Whether you just want to view peoples finds, the latest news in the hobby, or just a chat, this platform could be just right for you.

We recently interviewed Detector Network‘s Scott Holden on the BIG Metal Detecting TV Show, along with Adrian Gayler who initially reviewed the Detector Network, we discussed the site, the reasons for its launch and the future. Having spoke at length to Scott and Adrian, both publicly and privately, we feel that the site is a fantastic opportunity for hobbyist’s to move away from other social media location’s and utilise this fantastic conception. Users can create groups, private club groups, Business pages, media and much more. Much like Facebook, but a sole Metal detecting platform.

Future site developments are already in progress and promise an experience far surpassing any current subject social media related platform. On a personal note, I keenly awaited the app launch as I mainly use my mobile phone, upon the recent Android release, I downloaded it as soon as I was informed and lo, I’m actually using the platform far more than previous, and we are able to stream the BIG Detecting show live. We have also acquired more readers and viewers from the USA, and received several article submissions from these sources.

Congratulations to the developers and we hope Metal detectorists worldwide will sign up to this free Metal detecting specific site.

Scott will again join Adrian and Dave on the BIG Detecting show to discuss all the new developments on Thursday 5th November at 8pm.
