INDIANA JONES 5 CONFIRMED AND HINTS OF WHEN ITS SET.

Disney recently announced a number of new films in post production, but the one we have all been waiting for was confirmed, with Harrison Ford reprising his role as Archaeologist – Indiana Jones.

Indiana Jones’ last cinematic outing was the much-maligned Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. A fifth movie is on the way, and we can rest assured that we’ll still be seeing Harrison Ford with that fedora and bullwhip in the franchise’s next instalment.

Frank Marshall, a producer on the movie, shared an update with Den of Geek. “Yeah, we are working on the script,” he said. “There will only be one Indiana Jones and that’s Harrison Ford. What I’m excited about with Jim [James Mangold] is a great story. I think you see that in his movies like Ford Vs Ferrari. It’s all about characters and telling a good story. So I’m excited to see what he comes up with. I haven’t seen [the script] yet so I don’t know what to tell you.”

Mangold, who is writing the new script is also set to direct Indiana Jones 5 after Steven Spielberg stepped away. Spielberg helmed all four of the franchises’ entries so far, but Indy fans shouldn’t be too worried – the legendary director is sticking around as a producer.

Although the film has gone through a few screenwriters and has lost Spielberg as director, things still seem promising for the sequel. With Mangold on board as writer and director, Indiana Jones 5 is shaping up to be another hit – and earlier this year, Ford commented: “We’re not going to make another Indiana Jones unless we are in a position to kill it… We want it to be the best. We’ve got some scheduling issues and a few script things to do, but we are determined to get it right before we get it made.”

In an update to when the film will be set, a recent tweet admiring the rock band The Velvet Underground, Mangold mentioned that he’s mentally living in the 1960s right now. The reason for this is because all of the projects he is working on at the moment take place in that time period. Even though Mangold didn’t specifically say Indiana Jones 5 by name, it is his next movie. This should confirm that the movie will be set sometime during the 1960s.

Indiana Jones 5 being set in the 1960s shouldn’t come as too big of a surprise. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull takes place in 1957, so having the next film pick up at least a few years later makes sense considering how much time has passed in the real world. By the time Indiana Jones 5 comes out, it will have been fourteen years since Indy’s last adventure. Ford was 64 at the time of production on the last film, and he’ll be almost 80 by the time Indiana Jones 5 is released. If the real-world gap is any indication, it seems Indiana Jones 5 could be set right near the end of the 1960s

With Indiana Jones 5 seemingly heading for the 1960s, it will be intriguing to see how Mangold weaves elements of the times into Indy’s last film. Of course, the element of Indiana Jones 5 that most fans are curious about is how it will end Indiana Jones’ story. Mangold has already shown a tremendous ability to give an iconic movie character a fitting franchise ending, so Indiana Jones 5 could follow in Logan‘s footsteps in that regard. But, whether or not that means killing the character or including setup for a passing of the baton remains to be seen.

Here’s hoping the film lives up to Ford’s words – though, from his performance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we know the actor is more than capable of perfectly reprising one of his much-loved roles for a franchise revival.

Let also hope that Shia Lebouf isn’t in it…..

At the moment, Indiana Jones 5 is scheduled to release July 29 2022 and we can not wait.
