The Mayor of Rochdale Charity Metal Detecting Rally report – 23/04/17
It was with great honour that the Archaeology and Metal detecting magazine were once again asked to organise a Charity metal detecting rally on behalf of the current Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Ray Dutton.
This is the 3rd occasion we have been requested to take part in raising money for Mayoral charities, this time including one very close to the Mayor and many participants in the event – The Lee Rigby Foundation.
Over 60 detectorist’s from throughout the North West of the UK arrived to help create an exceptionally successful event, raising over £750 for the Mayor’s Charities.
Coil to the soil was at 9am for the St Georges Day event, with participants arriving from 730am to the beautiful 75 acre site, kindly offered for use by the landowner. It was just before the first arrival that organiser and marshal – Archaeology and Metal detecting magazine editor Dave Sadler – was in awe at 3 Roe Deer passing near him at the centre of the site.
Crowds quickly gathered, as well as the Mayor’s commitee members, who were on site to take payments and organise the Raffle. It is with great thanks from the Mayor and his staff and all at Archmdmag for all prize donations from the Mayoress, Team of Yorkshire metal detecting group, The Church House Inn in Congleton, Artist – Dave Donaghy and all other individuals . Thank you for your kind support.
With plenty of land to detect, the detectorists set off in all directions and soon the usual collection of finds were being reported, mainly from Victorian onwards. But throughout the day more artifacts, coins and tokens came to light.
Charles 1st Hammered, James 1st Hammered, WW1 medals, Religious artifacts, Weights, bag seals, Crotal bells, knives and many more artifacts were discovered. We are still awaiting many images and footage from the day.
Special thanks for the images and footage currently collated to Andrew Jones, James Snelson, Digger Dawn, John Webb, Mandy Dale, Jackie Smith, Paul Parnell, John Titchen, Dave Donaghy, Lauren Sullivan and the many others.
A big thank you to Andrew Jones of Metal Detecting Britain and Beyond, Digger Dawn, Pete Sale – Ant Doyle and Mark Thompson of North West and Manchester Metal detecting group, Carol Wardle, Lauren Sullivan, Gaynor Brown, Chloe Brown and Bev Place for their support and Participation throughout the organisation and participation of the event.
